Morocco Match Nigeria’s Historic FIFA Ranking Record After 32 Years
Thirty-two years after Nigeria reached fifth in the world, Morocco have finally reached the same historic height.
Morocco have climbed to fifth place in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking, becoming only the second African nation to reach that position.
The Atlas Lions moved above Brazil in the latest ranking after Brazil were held to a 1–1 draw by Australia. Morocco's recent results, including victories over Gabon and Lesotho in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, helped push them to a record fifth place.
It is a remarkable moment for Moroccan football, but it is also a moment that brings back memories of one of the greatest generations in Nigerian football history.

The year was 1994.
Nigeria's Super Eagles were flying high after winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and qualifying for their first ever FIFA World Cup.
That generation, featuring players such as Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George, Sunday Oliseh and Jay-Jay Okocha, climbed to fifth in the FIFA world rankings in April 1994.
For more than three decades, no other African men's national team had matched that position.
FIFA's current historical record still lists fifth as Nigeria's highest ever ranking.
Now Morocco have joined them.
Morocco's rise has been remarkable.
Before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Atlas Lions were ranked 22nd in the world. Their historic run to the semi-finals changed their position dramatically, with Morocco finishing the year ranked 11th.
Their progress continued into 2026.
After the 2026 World Cup, where Morocco reached the quarter-finals, they climbed to sixth in July. Their latest rise to fifth has now taken them to the highest position ever achieved by an African team.

It is another chapter in a remarkable transformation of Moroccan football.
Morocco's recent success has not been built around one tournament alone.
The Atlas Lions became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022.
Four years later, they again made a deep run at the World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals in 2026. FIFA notes that Morocco defeated the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32 and beat Canada 3–0 in the Round of 16 before their quarter-final exit against France.
Their ranking rise is therefore another statistical reflection of a team that has consistently competed at a high level internationally.
There is something particularly significant about the number five.
For Nigeria, it represents one of the greatest moments in the history of the Super Eagles.
For Morocco, it represents how far the Atlas Lions have travelled in a relatively short period.
Two African football nations. Two different generations. One historic FIFA ranking.
Nigeria — 5th, 1994.
Morocco — 5th, 2026.
The record that belonged exclusively to Nigeria for 32 years now has company.
Morocco's fifth-place position is currently reflected in FIFA's latest ranking information, with FIFA noting that the ranking remains unofficial until the relevant matches are approved as international 'A' matches. The next official ranking update is scheduled for October 7, 2026.
But regardless of what happens next, Morocco have already written their name into African football history.
From Nigeria's golden generation of 1994 to Morocco's modern rise, the African continent has once again produced a national team capable of breaking into football's global elite.
The number is five.
Nigeria did it first.
Now Morocco have matched it.
And African football has another historic chapter to remember.
