Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has embraced Islam, marking a major personal development in the life of one of Nigeria’s most recognisable footballers.

The 33-year-old defender reportedly converted to Islam in Doha, Qatar, after reciting the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith. A video showing Troost-Ekong reciting the testimonies of faith in Arabic has since circulated widely on social media.

Reports from Qatar indicate that Troost-Ekong made the declaration while in Doha, where he currently plays for Al-Ahli in the Qatar Stars League. He has also reportedly expressed a desire to read more and learn about Islam.

A New Chapter Away From Football

Troost-Ekong’s conversion comes after a remarkable football career that has taken him across Europe and the Middle East.

The Nigerian defender has played for clubs including Udinese, Watford, Salernitana and PAOK, before continuing his career in the Middle East.

His international career with Nigeria was equally significant.

Troost-Ekong made more than 80 appearances for the Super Eagles, representing the country at the FIFA World Cup and several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

His defining international moment came at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he captained Nigeria to the final and was named the tournament’s Player of the Tournament.

He later announced his retirement from international football.

A Personal Decision

While the video confirms Troost-Ekong’s recitation of the Shahada and reports have emerged about his conversion, the defender has not publicly provided detailed reasons behind his decision.

His conversion has already generated reactions among football fans in Nigeria, Qatar and across the wider football community.

For Troost-Ekong, this marks a deeply personal new chapter away from the football pitch as he continues his professional career in Qatar.
