The Clock is Ticking: Football’s Radical Anti-Time-Wasting Rules
The football world is buzzing over a viral report regarding
drastic rule changes for the 2026/27 season. Designed to kill "dark
arts" and "parking the bus," these rules suggest that
time-wasting will no longer just earn a yellow card—it will cost you the ball.
The Breakdown of Proposed Changes
The Possession Flip: If a player deliberately stalls during any restart, the referee will simply award possession to the opposing team.
Goal Kick to Corner: In perhaps the most
controversial twist, delaying a goal kick would result in an
immediate corner kick for the opposition.
Throw-in Reversals: Taking too long to find
a teammate? The throw-in is handed over to the other side.
The 10-Second Sub Rule: Players must exit
the pitch within 10 seconds of their number being called. If they fail, the
substitute is barred from entering for 60 seconds, forcing the team to
play a man down until the time is up and the ball is out of play.
A Quick Reality Check
While these "breaking" updates are gaining
traction, they are currently framed more as experimental
trials (similar to those seen in developmental leagues like MLS Next Pro)
rather than a confirmed global mandate from IFAB. They represent a
"nuclear option" against time-wasting that hasn't quite hit the
Premier League or Champions League yet.
