Arsenal Didn’t Fail Wenger. The Arsenal Board Failed Him, Then Let Him Take the Blame - Kieran Gibbs Reveals
Gibbs, who spent much of his career at Arsenal under Wenger, has suggested that the club was often just two or three signings away from becoming champions, but financial restrictions and the departure of key players repeatedly held the team back.
Speaking about his time in north London, the former left-back explained that Arsenal went through a difficult period following their move from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium. The financial demands of building the new stadium affected the club’s spending power, leaving Wenger with the challenge of maintaining competitiveness without always having the resources available to strengthen his squad sufficiently.
“During my time there, I always felt that we were only two or three signings away from winning the league,” Gibbs said.
He also pointed to the club’s reluctance to spend heavily during that period, alongside the loss of important players at crucial moments, as factors that prevented Arsenal from making the final step towards the Premier League title.
Arsenal’s struggles during the latter part of Wenger’s reign have often dominated discussions about his legacy. Although the Frenchman transformed the club and delivered three Premier League titles, including the famous unbeaten 2003/04 campaign, his final years were increasingly defined by the inability to reclaim the league crown.
However, Gibbs believes the conversation should also consider what Wenger managed to achieve under difficult circumstances.
Arsenal remained a regular presence in the Champions League for much of Wenger’s tenure, finishing outside the Premier League’s top four for the first time in his final two seasons, when they placed fifth in 2016/17 and sixth in 2017/18.
For Gibbs, that level of consistency deserves greater recognition, particularly when compared with the difficulties other major English clubs have experienced in recent years.
“I think he did an incredible job and I’m very fortunate to have played for Arsène Wenger,” the former defender added.
His comments offer a different perspective on a manager whose later years at Arsenal were accompanied by growing frustration among supporters. While critics argued that Wenger had become too cautious in the transfer market and needed to change his approach, Gibbs believes the club’s limitations also played a significant role.
Arsenal’s trophy drought in the Premier League remains one of the most debated periods in the club’s modern history. Despite possessing talented players and regularly qualifying for Europe’s biggest competition, they struggled to match the consistency and spending power of their strongest rivals.
The arrival of new competitors and the increasing financial strength of Premier League clubs made the challenge even greater. Meanwhile, losing influential players meant Wenger repeatedly had to rebuild rather than simply add the final pieces to an established title-winning team.
Arsenal still enjoyed success during this period, winning several FA Cups, but the Premier League title continued to elude them.
Gibbs’ assessment raises an uncomfortable question for Arsenal supporters: could the club have won more league titles if Wenger had been given the backing to recruit those two or three additional players?
There is no definitive answer. Transfers do not guarantee trophies, and tactical decisions, injuries and competition also shape a title race. Nevertheless, his experience inside the dressing room adds weight to the argument that Arsenal may have been closer to challenging for the biggest prize than their long wait suggested.
Ultimately, Wenger’s Arsenal era remains a story of remarkable consistency, memorable football and missed opportunities. Gibbs’ reflections suggest that the club’s failure to win another Premier League title cannot be explained by the manager alone, and that the decisions made above him deserve a place in the debate.
