Newcastle Were Poor as Leeds Run Riot at Elland Road

Newcastle United endured a night to forget on Monday as they were comfortably beaten 4–1 by Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Magpies arrived unbeaten in the Premier League, but their performance quickly fell apart as Leeds took control of the game. Newcastle struggled to match the home side’s intensity and spent long periods looking short of ideas in both midfield and attack.

The damage was done before half-time. Leeds scored three times in a dominant spell, leaving Newcastle with a mountain to climb after the break. Their defensive organisation was poor, while they struggled to create enough chances to threaten Leeds' goal.

Leeds added a fourth after the interval through Noah Okafor, effectively ending any hope of a Newcastle comeback. Bazoumana Touré scored a late consolation for Newcastle, but it was little more than a small positive on an otherwise disappointing night.

Leeds United thrashes Newcastle United 4-1 in Premier League match

For Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, it was his first Premier League defeat in charge. The result also brought an end to Newcastle's unbeaten start and highlighted weaknesses that had not been fully exposed in their opening games.

Newcastle now have plenty to think about. Their next league game is against Hull City, giving Jaissle an opportunity to demand a much stronger response from his players.

The 4–1 defeat was not simply a case of Newcastle being unlucky. Leeds were the better team, and Newcastle were poor in almost every important area of the pitch.
